This is a chronic disease caused by different factors and with several complications, characterized by an extreme fat level within the organism which is determined when the range of the body mass or Quetelet index of the individual is higher than 25 units. This is the worldwide most recommended method.
It is well known that this world wide problem represents a risk factor that brings with it some others diseases such as for example: diabetes, hypertension cardiac diseases, ictus, some sorts of cancer and others.
However, more important than the diagnostic of Obesity is to detect those patients who without being overweight, present an elevated cardiovascular risk. This is one of the more severe problems in public health; it appears on the population much more severely than malnutrition.
It is estimated that some 200.000 people in Latin America will die each year of this complications.
Nowadays, the present evidenced suggests obesity is a multifactor disease in which we must include several factors such as: genetics factors, socioeconomic factors, psychological factors, hormonal factors, development related factors, decreased physical activity, pharmacology and in some occasions brain damage, specifically of the Hypothalamus, which can result in Obesity.
Furthermore, Obesity is the most frequent metabolic disorder in the more developed countries, which presence has more than doubled over the last 10 years, taking into consideration the rise of children and teenagers with this problem.
