  Restrictive Procedures - Intragastric Balloon

The Silicone Intragastric balloon of is filled with saline or blue methylene that contains a white valve that can be seen in X-rays. This product is becoming much more than a "way of life" in several markets such as Europe. It is of easy installation; it is possible to place it in just 15 minutes, and takes approximately the same time to remove it.

It can only remain inside the patient for a period of no more than 6 months, after time which a second Gastric Balloon could be installed. Generally the patient has only one Gastric Balloon (and occasionally two Gastric Balloons). It is not common that patients succeed by utilizing the Gastric Balloon for a period of years.

This type of technology is appropriate for patients that do not want to go through an obesity surgery. The greater number of our patients is those with a BMI less than 35 (They do not qualify for the Gastric Banding, Gastric Sleeve or By pass Surgery). And it can also reduce the risk of undergoing an operation as for example: Obesity, Hip Surgery, etc.)

In general the intragastric balloon is the right option for temporary use for weight loss therapy on patients who need to achieve some weight loss. Complications with the intragastric balloon are unusual, being nothing but a little discomfort for the first few days and only some patients may require removing the Gastric Balloon. The patient just has to endure the pain until the discomfort goes away.

General Considerations

The total weight to lose is approximately from 15 to 20 kilograms in the best of the cases, as somewhat exceptional, we must keep in mind that the patient will constantly feel with a full stomach.

The time of continuous permanence of the balloon is recommended not to pass 6 months; the balloon could get damageded before this time and this would imply an Emergency removal; for this reason the patient should have a periodic control with the Gastroenterologist. Some intense physical activities can be diminished during the time the balloon is present; the suggested supplementary diet consists on dropping the consumption of hydrocarbonates, fats, alcohol, sugar, etc., As it is a restrictive procedure, the patient will be able to consume a minimum quantity of food that should be well balanced by the nutriologist team.
