Diet

There are as many diets as there are obese people. What is really sought for the patients is a change in their habits; there are not bad diets, only "impatient patients ".

The diet guidelines and the Food Pyramid for Americans serve as model of how and what should be eaten. The Diet Guidelines for Americans recommend to elect a variety of cereals (especially whole grain), a variety of fruits and vegetables, and to be guided by the Food Pyramid. The Pyramid tells us how many portions of each food group we should consume on the average, and serves also for children older than 2 years.

Exercise

Physical activity doesn't need to be exhausting to help us maintain our weight and promote health.

The School of Sport Medicine of the United States, the Center for Disease Control and the Office of the Surgeon General of the United States recommend that people of all ages do a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity of moderate intensity almost every day of the week.

The preliminary evidence on hand shows that the accumulated activity or the activity exerted in short times can provide the similar health benefits as that from continuous activity.

Additional health benefits can be obtained if the time or the intensity of the activity is increased and if resistance training is included. The short and intense periods of activity can offer similar benefits than the longer sessions that are less intense.
