  Obesity Management - Pharmacologic

There are two medicines approved by the Food and Drug administration (FDA).

These are Sibutramine and Orlistat. Their administration must be always supervised by a doctor.

Butramine

Taken once a day diminishes the anxiety for foods, above all, in those patients that consume high quantities of flours and sweets; it also has effect on the basal caloric burn off and regulates the hormone that stimulates hunger.

This has not been approved for children yet, but there are already studies conducted on adolescents. It must be used with a lot of caution in elderly patients, above all if they present arterial hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias.

Some inconveniences may be presented, such as dry mouth due to the effect of calorigenesis, and insomnia; reason why, ideally, this drug must be administered in the morning hours, but in general terms Sibutramine is a very safe drug.

Orlistat

It diminishes fat absorption to the intestines. In our opinion the main idea here is to educate the patient so that he chooses foods with low fat content.

When the patient takes the drug and eats foods rich in fat, he will present great stomach discomfort and diarrhea, which is very uncomfortable, so with time the patient learns to moderate his intake of fats.
